Title: CDDA Game Launcher (Automatic updates and more!)
Post by: rremyroy on December 31, 2015, 03:41:24 AM
Download here (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/releases)

This is a Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead game launcher for Windows only. It initially includes an automatic game updating process that will preserve your configs, save games, templates, memorials, custom tilesets, custom soundpacks and custom mods across versions. It preserves your previous version and it can also easily restore it. There are many more planned features (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/blob/master/README.md).

Implemented features

What does it look like?

(http://i.imgur.com/mo9QD1J.png)

Where is my previous version?

Is it stored in the previous_version directory inside your game directory.

I think the launcher just deleted my files. What can I do?

The launcher goes to great lengths not to delete any file that could be important to you. Whenever it deletes files that could be important, it will prompt a confirmation from you. When doing an update or installing the game, it will move all files from the selected directory into the previous_version directory inside your game directory (unless you selected one of the settings to prevent that which is not the default behavior). When restoring the previous version, it will move all files from the selected directory into a temporary directory, it will move the previous version files into the selected directory and it will move the temporary files into the previous_version directory. This means that restoring your previous version twice should bring you back exactly where you were.

It does not work? Can you help me?

Submit your issues on Github (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/issues/new). Try to report bugs effectively (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html).

How do I update to a new version of the game launcher?

Download the new release and use that executable instead. Alternatively, the later versions of the launcher include a self-update process which will overwrite the executable with the latest version.

Will you make a Linux or Mac OS X version?

Most likely not. The Linux official builds are known for being difficult to run on various distributions and most Linux players compile their own game. There are now official Mac OS X experimental builds. I might do a Mac OS X version if there is a demand for it. Follow this issue (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/issues/73) for news about a potential Mac OS X version.

I would like to thank you for this software.

Every thanks message is appreciated. You can also buy me a beer by donating bitcoins to 15SxanjS9CELTqVRCeEKgzFKYCCvSDLdsZ (https://is.gd/76SMKC) .

This is awesome, gonna try this tomorrow. I've really got to start an application section on the mods list or maybe a new tag...this deserves its own section.

Nicely done :)
Edit: corrected a word. Swype is more trouble than its worth sometimes. Sleep eludes me./

You have to select the directory. It is done by the top. Then execute the game.

Nice! I am testing it now.
It would be nice if you can check what features have been added to the game before you download the version.

It seems the program does not make the command prompt execute the program automatically for what ever reason... Try running the program with admin permissions.

Already did it, same result.
Title: Re: CDDA Game Launcher (Automatic updates and more!)
Post by: Noctifer on December 31, 2015, 08:00:53 AM
Try messing with the options on the buttons. Or move the game to another folder and change the directory to there.
Title: Re: CDDA Game Launcher (Automatic updates and more!)
Post by: Etherdreamer on December 31, 2015, 08:06:10 AM
Actually The folder was first with other name (the name when you unzip the game), the launcher was first in other folder I have separated for dump the mods and other versions of the game. So I tested that already, same result. With admin perm etc.

Any non-English characters in folder or user name, maybe?

As for me, it works like a charm!
Title: Re: CDDA Game Launcher (Automatic updates and more!)
Post by: Etherdreamer on December 31, 2015, 09:32:26 AM
Nope, no special characters, no "Ñ", check screens, all are in english and there is no weird folder names or Alien-scaly-fuzzy-martian-hard-trash-emo-grindcore, trihop, funk style structure.

Edit: At last find it out. It don´t allow spaces in the folder names...
So have  Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead, changing it to CataclysmDarkDaysAhead that fix it.
That should be added in the op.

O.o OH! Ima try and be the first to try this wineskined over for mac users :D

(btw heads up prepare for headaches galore or simple "it works") Only thing that has given me any trouble wineskined so far is steam. Which means I can't play any of the Windows games I own. :(

I am interested to see how this will work. Might even do that sometime today.... or in 2 years. Whenever it happens.

This is one of the known issue (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/issues/1) so far. You probably have large save files that take times to copy. I will be working on finding a good solution for this eventually.

When you put the launcher in the same dir as the game then it craps out when you update the game.
When I changed that then it has worked as a charm so far.
Thanks

Noted (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/issues/6). You should be able to keep the launcher in the game directory. That will be added in an upcoming release.

When you put the launcher in the same dir as the game then it craps out when you update the game.

I've added support for having the launcher in the same directory as your game. It will not be moved or copied away. It is in the last release (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/releases).

The tool is improving a lot, thanks for share it with us. But there is a more safe way to migrate the character with all his stats / knowledge  (and maybe one vehicle) to a new world without breaking something?
Title: Re: CDDA Game Launcher (Automatic updates and more!)
Post by: Malkeus on January 03, 2016, 12:05:55 AM
It's a bit of a pain...but I just delete the #Q files that don't end in .sav from the save directory. Then I find the map tiles that have been most recently modified by looking at the timestamps (not of the directories, of the files themselves) and delete everything else. That usually leaves me sitting at my base with all my things, but the world outside the immediate area is completely different.
Back up your save first, ymmv, I am not responsible for damage to you files or your dog dying because of attempting this...

I just kinda skimmed.  Sorry if this has already been asked.  Does it update itself too? :P
Really awesome idea, btw.
I'd suggest instead of just making a backup folder that you actually backup the entire thing to an archive file or some such. I usually was doing it manually with winrar.

It's slower to make a compressed backup of the whole game directory than just moving it in a sub directory. It also slow down the restore process. Backup for saves is a planned feature for the launcher.

That feels kinda bad or cheaty. If you want to avoid evolved monster, you should adjust your evolution scale option. The map should be big enough for plenty of fun without having to move your character to a new world. Starting a new character should be fun enough that you shouldn't have to move your character from an old world. There are plenty of way to start with an overpowered character with the debug menu or the initial points you can give yourself.

This is cool :)

A few questions :)

I use the latest x32 tileset from Chezza whice is not PR`ed yet so I have to extract it into the GFX folder every time I get a new version does this overwrite all that I also use chezz sound set which I also need to extract.

Basically do I still need to update manually extracted files with this tool? :)

Thanks in advance

It should keep any custom tileset if the name is different from one of the ones provided by the base game in the update process. You can edit the tileset.txt file in the tileset directory to make sure the name is unique.

today my antivirus say you launcher as a malware.....

This has been reported previously (https://www.reddit.com/r/cataclysmdda/comments/3yv7d7/cdda_game_launcher_automatic_updates_and_more/cyklq85) by another user. Like I mentioned on that comment, you can always build the compiled executable from the source and check the source yourself if you do not trust the built release.

Post by: Malkeus on January 30, 2016, 11:04:47 PM
You can download from github but it fails at the end? I don't use Firefox, but when something similar happens in chrome, it's typically malware protection stopping it based on the low number of prior downloads. It's a safe diagnosis I can assure you, but due to its relatively small target group and age (very new file) it gets flagged as unsafe by some programs.

I can't say for certain if that is your issue without an error message though.

You could try downloading one of the older versions which still is capable of updating the launcher and are if you have any luck that way. Bon chance!

They all eat resources (suppose this was the same as last one tbh)
And.....well there aint another reason because the last lot was so damn good.

Glad you got it worked out. I run a scan with bitdefender every few days. Really, the best thing you can do for yourself is get an adblocker and a noscript analogue for your browser. Those will prevent most risky clicks from every appearing on your screen.

Sorry the the delay guys. I'm far away from where I normally am.

If you have trouble downloading or launching the launcher, try disabling your anti-virus/anti-malware software or adding the launcher executable on your whitelist. That is the most likely cause of the problems you are having. Many free/low quality product might detect it as a problematic executable and block it. That is a false positive. If you do not trust my built release, you should build the executable from the source or run it with Python. If you are familiar with Python it should be easy but I'll try to provide a building guide eventually.

I have many good theories as to why those low quality products detect the launcher as a problematic executable but that might have to wait for the next message.

author probaly used something in code what look suspicious for AV software, i have problems like this with my own programs when i use system("pause");

some AV are paranoid and give a lot of false positives

I've been having a bit a problem with the self updater the last two versions (.9&.9.1). I get notified, have it update and reboot, but not actually update the exe.

Just me?

I have had a problem with it saying it is not a valid win32 application but I feel this has to do with access control settings.

The self-update process is not always working properly. I've created an issue about it (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/issues/39) if you want follow the resolution.

I wasn't having any trouble with the launchers self update until this new build that was supposed to fix the bug with the self update.

Now it won't self update. I tell it to update and it downloads the update, reboots, and tells me I need to update.

It should be fixed with 0.9.4 but only when that version will self-update. So, the next time I release a version, it should be fine.

Careful, whichever directory is set to host the output files gets wiped, as in anything that was in that folder gets deleted and replaced.
This is obviously unintentional but I couldn't imagine the horror if I had set the output directory to my Desktop..

Woot. I can finally get Launcher to run nicely inside my wrapper. Apparently removing debug fixed somehow. YAY. Still can't launch from launcher, but it makes DL's easier.

Nothing should be deleted, only moved in the previous_version subdirectory.

Version 1.0 of the CDDA Game Launcher has been released. This version should be stable enough for most people to use. It includes new save backups features with automatic backup options that can be useful for a few of you.

The only 2 features left in my plan are the tileset manager and the font presets. If you want to suggest new feature, you can do so on Github (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/issues/new).

Thanks to everyone who tried the previous versions. Thanks to those who helped me fix the different bugs so far.

If you want to help us translate the game, we currently have translations for English, Russian and French. I can provide anyone who would want to translate the launcher into another language with all the tools, help and support to do so. Get in touch with me.

If you use and like the launcher, consider donating bitcoins to 15SxanjS9CELTqVRCeEKgzFKYCCvSDLdsZ.

I want to report 2 bugs:
- The 1.3.2 version moving itself to the previous_version directory when updating the game.
- Also it crashes when backuping the save file.

There is not enough free space on your disk to backup your save or to update the game.

Yes, I know that. It is probably better to check available disk space and notify user prior to starting the backup.

The backup crash might still be happening but the other ones should be fixed by now.

I'm running through Wine in Linux Mint Sarah so I'm not sure if this error is occurring for people running through actual Windows.  Updates and installing mods is working fine, but when I use the launcher to start the game while the game does start instead of closing properly the launcher crashes giving this error message:

It's only a minor annoyance, I can launch it manually instead of through the launcher. The launcher still makes updating far easier especially with the hoops I have to jump through in the command line if I want to try using the linux version. I just thought the issue should be mentioned.

Edit: Turns out that it's not just on starting a game with the launcher. It crashes whenever I close it.

Hey proxiehunter,

From when I can see of this crash description, it seems like the launcher is using a win32 API that are not implemented by Wine. This might be a duplicate issue (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/issues/86) that someone else already reported.

It's a little harder for me to support players using Wine, but if you report the issue on Github (https://github.com/remyroy/CDDA-Game-Launcher/issues/new), I might eventually take a look at it and see if I can resolve it.

Other than the crash on closing the launcher it's been working fine for me.

Edit: To be clear the game does not crash. The game loads and plays just fine. It's just that whenever the launcher should close it instead crashes.

I used to run CDDA launcher and tiles.exe separate, but inside the same wrapper, and just use the launcher for updates, then change the execution file over. But that hasn't been necesary in a while, unfortunately my launcher doesn't seem to want to not crash since I re DLed. I may have to retry from scratch.

My issue of the launcher crashing appears to be solved. Solution: Update to newest version of Wine. The version downloaded through the Linux software manager is about two or three versions out of date. Now that I'm running the most current version the launcher no longer crashes. I suggest any Linux users experiencing issues try the same.

HUh, figured out my issue to. I turned off the force use X hoping it would make it stop giving me the crash message while it runs fine (are you running Fullscreen? It pops up during launch not close for me) I'll try updating Wine, I just DLed it so I would have thought it was up to date, but maybe not.

I'm running Windowed Borderless because in the past that's seemed to run smoother than full screen while effectively being full screen.

Is there a way to get the launcher to update to a build other than the current build or reverting to your most recent one? The issue has been solved with update 5920 but 5917 seemed to be bugged and I couldn't figure out how to get the launcher to get anything other than 5918 or the build 5904 that I'd been using before I updated.

You can select any build from the last 2-3 days from the drop-down list, and the launcher will update the game to that version when you click the button.

Is there an option to disable automatic previous-version-backup?
It's quite annoying that folder with previous version of CDDA is using over 2GB of memory and has to be deleted manually :D

I will add the option. You can also use the option "Do not copy or move the save directory" if your save directory is the reason why the previous version is that big.

Cross posting from the blazemod thread because it was recommended I bring this to your attention as well.

Not sure if this should really go here or in the CDDA Game Launcher thread. Nice to see the changes made in this recent update to the version that comes packaged with the launcher (mods/blazemod: fix `shards` (metal fragments) weighing too much. mods/blazemod: fix `dshards` (diamond fragment), too.). What is desperately needed though is for the main mod and for the version packaged with the launcher to delete the following from blaze_override.json:

"type": "construction",
    "//": "Rest of vehicle construction done in the vehicle construction menu",
    "category": "OTHER",
    "description": "Start Vehicle Construction",
    "difficulty": 0,
    "time": 10,
    "pre_special": "check_empty",
    "post_special": "done_vehicle",
    "components": [ [ [ "frame", 1 ], [ "hdframe", 1 ], [ "frame_wood", 1 ], [ "xlframe", 1 ], [ "frame_wood_light", 1 ], [ "foldwoodframe", 1 ], [ "foldframe", 1 ], [ "gloople", 1 ], [ "oozle", 1 ], [ "gray", 1 ], [ "diamondframe", 1 ] ] ]

This code causes a bug that makes beginning construction on a new vehicle require two frames both of which are consumed. Trying with just one frame consumes the frame and does not create a vehicle. Deleting it is of course simple but for those of us who use the launcher and update the game frequently we would have to go into the json and delete it again every update because whenever you update via the launcher the mods folder gets overwritten with the launchers version of the mods.

If I knew how to update the core mod in a way that would result in the launcher using that version I'd do it myself because it should be one of the simplest possible fixes, but I don't know how to do that or if it requires the original author of blaze mod or possibly the author of the launcher to do so.

I believe the blazemod is distributed with the base game. Just create a pull request on the main game's github with this fix.

I´m loving the launcher! One question though.

When tilesets officially in the game are updated i.e.: ChestHole Tileset which is updated on a regular basis.

Are this updates made on the launcher aswell? Or do I have to manually update my tilesets?

Hello! I can't get the latest Launcher to download from Github. Is there a handy mirror I can use instead?

Thanks.

Oi. Arcana and Magic Items mod has been obseleted from the main game. Apparently it isn't on your launcher thingy?

Many of the mods shown installed on my launcher isn`t available on my in-game mod manager, is it because they were outdated for the current experimental version?

I believe there is a link on the mod tab that allows you to leave your mod location. I guess it is all up to Rremy to upload the mod.

My brother attempted to install the files to his desktop. When it did, it randomly deleted various files and shortcuts on his desktop for no reason. Upon my further investigation, all the files have been moved to an unknown location.

Any idea what caused this, or how to get the files back?

Also, quite a while ago i downloaded the latest launcher version, which permanently broke my launcher. I forget what the error said, since i deleted it, and am re-installing it now.

I can't seem to find my very old 0.A saves, I look at the 'previous version' file and it doesn't show my older saves or pictures.

This only recently happened after I re-downloaded and updated it yesterday. I'm going to be real irritated if I just lost my saves from 2014.

I can't explain what happened in words, but i'll put it up as pictures.

Hi, just wondering if there are any side effects of launching the game straight from the exe rather than through the launcher.

How do I get the launcher to stop replacing my version of PK's Rebalancing that I got from Github every time I update my game?

There is no easy way of doing this. The launcher assume that the mods provided by the base game are always better version than what was installed previously which might not be true for some mods like PK's.

I might have to add some way of preserving a mod. We previously had some talks about mod versioning. Maybe we could use that and compare versions too. It is a work in progress.

I'd say pisskop should change identifier of the mod.

Bug that had a long while ago, not sure if it got fixed yet, but it's kinda hard for me to replicate.
Basically, if your ISP's internet isn't functional (not payed for the month, etc) all web browsing attempts lead to a walled garden.
Not an issue, normally, but this can cause issues for offline play, as the launcher does not seem to have proper error handling for when it inadvertently tries to read the walled garden page that the ISP feeds it.
Workaround is to disconnect the computer itself from the network in question before running the launcher.
Best way to solve it, launcher wise, would probably to have an "offline mode" on the launcher, to prevent it from accessing the internet when not needed, as well as providing error handling for when the urls it tries to load gives unexpected outputs.

Is it just me or are a lot of the mods listed on the mod tab out of date. Most of them seem to go threads that haven't been updated in a year+.

I was using the CDDA Game Launcher and I accidentally clicked the "Restore Previous Version" button. >_<

When I launched the game all my current save data was gone.  O_O

It was several weeks worth of gameplay is there anyway to get it back? T_T

I've tried pressing the "Restore Previous Version" button again but it does not appear to bring back the saved game I was playing.

I think I've figured out my mistake.

After clicking "Restore Previous Version" I also clicked "Update Game" to bring the version of the game back up to the more recent release version.

The CDDA Game Launcher then replaced the game files and also the saved games being stored in the "Previous Version" directory with the ones that existed prior to the update.

Thus I permanently replaced my more current saved games with the older ones from the last time I'd updated CDDA.

Although it is frustrating I don't think there is anything to be done about it except to start a new world and explore. ^_^

The "available" builds are not catching up to the latest build (assuming you're selecting x64 Tiles?) The builds are failing-- switch to console and you'll see the numbers change to match.

I can't either, it seems the builds failed for Windows x64(64bit) and OSX, or something.If you click on x86(32bit) it will allow you to update to the current build, but I haven't tried that yet.

Edit: switching to console doesn't seem to allow me to update, only if I click on 32 bit.

My guess is to make sure you have the good version of PK Rebalance, delete it from the mods tab in the launcher, then manually re-add to the mod directory. The launcher (hopefully?) should ignore it.
