Cataclysm: Texts, Notes, Ads, & Messages.
« on: April 25, 2013, 08:04:47 AM »
Sticky Edit:
If anyone wants to contribute their own stuff to this thread, go for it, man.  The more merrier.  Our goal is to make a big, ugly, smelly library of text for the devs to pick through when they want to add lore or content.

So far, they've implemented an in-game item called a 'flier', which pulls its description from a raw file of various snippets. In the snippet file we can describe ads, propaganda, bills, or whatever. If you wanna write stuff that will appear on a flier, this is the format:
Code: [Select]
{
    "category": "flier",
    "text": "in-game text goes here, in between these quotes"
},

--------------------------------------------------
Since I can't help code, I'll try to be useful by providing some filler material for things like e-mails and journals.  Maybe, once quests and NPCs get ironed out, I'll do dialog/phrases for characters to use. Feel free to use or modify or disregard anything here.

These could be on rotation like Mp3 players work now maybe? Or something you find at radio towers.
It might be f*n to static o*t par** o* t**m bas*d on rec*pt*on.

Some print advertisements.  Maybe these would work like spray paint does now? or would be items, like posters or fliers?

Some e-mails you might find in labs.  Here I'm trying to stick with what Cata lore I know of, and give hints or reasons as to why things are all crazy. Later I might do some e-mails that go back and forth in dialog, or do serial e-mails that tell slightly longer stories.

A couple e-mails for police stations. After factions are in, I'll have more stuff to work with.  Also, I'm just making up names.  Maybe the to: and from: fields can have procedurally generated names slapped in there.  Or there could be characters, like CEOs and politicians, whose names reoccur in these messages.

The lore is pretty vague, so this stuff will also be fairly vague.  For now, I'm assuming that power armor  and lasers were openly advertised, but things like teleportation and cloning and other questionable research were kept secret.

Decided to view both sides. Not only do you have the really paranoid cold-war style USA, but you've also got the underclass. How would they feel about the horror around them? Plus, what are the government saying about spies and terrorists? Might add more graffiti to this later.

Sure. It's all to be used, stolen, chopped up, or mutated as you please.

I thought about doing posters for bands, but that would probably be better as procedurally generated content.  Especially since real world bands seem to use this method to pick their names. (e.g. Vampire Weekend, Imagine Dragons.)  I might just construct lists of suitable-band-like-words for the game to squish together like:
ELEMENT A + ELEMENT B
The A+B
DJ A & MC B
NAME and the PLURALS
The game could either randomize a name for every poster, or gen 3 to 5 at the beginning of the game, and have them recur through the game.  Your survivor would find continually find ads and billboards for the "Stomach Monkeys" or whatever.  Immersion!

The same thing could work for miscellaneous products or companies.  Especially for office buildings that need random company names --names like "Dynamic Solutions" "Apollo Systems" or "Blue Star Management" where you have no clue what that company does, but you know for sure that it involves a lot of three-ring binders and teleconferencing.
