I'll put here some of my experiments with voxel tiles.

Sooo, is this something you've managed to get hooked into the game, or is this purely for illustrative purposes?

Either way, that survival shelter is looking pretty good :)

For now, I'm just looking how would it look like. Although I use some scripts to generate the picture from an actual game.

Interesting. I'd love to see a stonesense-esque program for cataclysm, if thats what you're working towards.

cdda supports isometric tiles, so they won't be looking too good as there are will be no shadows.

Sure, but these are voxel tiles, not pixel. I'm using MagicaVoxel for rendering. For realtime graphics we can use Unity 5 with light probes or Sonic Ether Global Illumination asset or some other voxel rendering technics. But it is a lot of work, I'm not sure if it worth it. Maybe iso tiles would look better than this.

What I mean is - cdda has just a 2d tiled map and it doesn't matter how many voxels are used in each tile.

This is pretty freaking cool! Even if you don't end up coding an actual somethingsomething to make this work with the game, it's still quite awesome to watch the images and wonder how it'd be. Thanks for making this!

There's also MagicEye, which you might be able to use for a true isometric perspective.  It doesn't look TOO hard to integrate using the curses bindings.

Did you mean NotEye (http://roguetemple.com/z/noteye/)?

I'm not an artist, but there are a lot of possibilities for those who are. And voxel tilesets are much easier to create than pixel.

I wish there was a way to add a grid to make tiles more distinct.
Here is what I mean:

I can do this in editor mode, but cannot in render. :(

Whoops, exactly that.

Yea, an untextured voxel tileset can work, but you can still texture your voxels, so it can absorb all the work you're willing to put into it >_<
I wish there was a way to add a grid to make tiles more distinct.
If you apply a texture to the voxel faces, they can just have a 1-pizel dark border.

Hmm, good idea, maybe I'll try to do this in Unity.

If you end up needing any textures, I'd be happy to make them for you.
